Yoga Therapeutics

Eating disorders are often considered diseases of disconnection or disassociation - a disconnection from many things such as: one’s emotions or memories, consequences of actions and ultimately the body and its physical sensations.

Ample research has shown that using somatic therapies we can assist a person in leveraging the physical body as a gateway for the embodiment of emotions. ‘The issues are held in the tissues’ is a phrase often used and for good reasons. In leveraging gently movements and yogic principles, a person can often find comfort after practicing these grounding techniques aimed at embodiment. These sensation and the supportive space to process any emotions, memories or fears they could bring up are how we help clients release blockages and move towards a space of healing and recovery.

Markay, the Founder of All Voices, is a Certified Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT) and has worked for years in using mindful movement and grounding techniques inherent to yoga’s asana, physical practice. Please know that all Yoga Therapeutics are done in a one-on-one setting or with a small and approved group so that the practice and techniques can be personalized to assist in the impact to the clients. Yoga Therapeutics are a somatic science and not what you would find at a studio or fitness center.

Experience your body as a gateway to connection with yourself and others

Finding a balance and being able re-integrate movement in a safe way or being exposed to movement after a time where it did not feel right for your body are both common concerns that personalized yoga therapeutics can help with.

Not all yoga practices are appropriate for those on their healing journey so Markay makes sure to leverages a trauma-informed lens and takes care to safely guide clients through a practice that allows them to connect with their physical sensations, body and breath while noticing the signals that are being send to them by the body and mind.

Yoga techniques most commonly leveraged include-

  • Restorative and gentle asana

  • Interoceptive meditation - guided meditation to bring awareness of the body

  • Yoga Nidra - yoga at the intersection of consciousness and rest

  • Abhyanga - self massage

  • Pranayama - connecting with the breathe

Markay also partners with a not-for-profit organization, Eat Breathe Thrive, that pioneers healing programming for assisting with mental health struggles and eating disorders.
