Stress and anxiety about food and body

There is much research about the gut-brain axis and the bi-directionality that these two vital organ systems have on our ability to function. Food and eating trauma can cause dysregulation that can impact the body and mind in ways that science is only starting to understand.

When a person is anxious or stressed the body responds and activates the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) also known as the Fight, Flight or Freeze side of the nervous system. In contrast, when the body is in a state a calmness or ease, the body activates the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) also known as the Rest, Digest and Heal side of the nervous system.. Previously, it was believed that the brain signaled downward to the rest of the body but in fact we now know that this signaling goes both ways as the body is also capable of sending important information upwards to the brain. In fact there is another part of the nervous system, called the Vagus Nervous System, the tenth cranial nerve or the wondering nerve, that plays an integral part in the gut-brain interactions.

The impacts of this bi-directionality across these nerve systems are incredible in our ability to impact the way we experience stress and anxiety.

All Voices educates its clients on these physiological phenomena of the nervous system as well as techniques for how we can assist the body to activate the Rest, Digest and Heal nervous system to calm the mind.
